Standard Gauge Railway (1,435 mm) single-track line of more than 3,000 km, comprising the three segments, and linking Lamu Port (Kenya)with Juba (South Sudan) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)

PROJECT STATUS

According to the latest available information, the project has
different preparation phases.

  • The Kenyan segment is at feasibility stage (S2B), as feasibility
    studies were developed in 2011, which may require to be updated and completed.
  • The Ethiopian segment 1 is at pre-feasibility stage (S2A), as some sections have only developed a preliminary design.
  • The South Sudanese segment is at enabling environment stage (S0).

PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • The planned LAPSSET Railway route connecting Lamu Port to Nairobi, South Sudan and Ethiopia is about 2,500 KM.

  • Preliminary designs and feasibility studies for were complete in 2015.

  • Project cost is estimated to be around 13.8 billion Kenyan Shillings.
